Koen Willems

Founder and Director of Healthcare Barcelona

Physiotherapist, Trainer & Health Coach


Koen holds a physiotherapy degree in Health Sciences from Maastricht, the Netherlands. He has additional training in cognitive psychology and chronic pain, with international work experience in the Netherlands, the USA, Canada, Germany, and the UK. He is the co-creator of the ICARA Institute (offering workplace rehab) and the chronic pain management institute Real Health NL, both in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He is the founder of Physiotherapy Barcelona and Running Barcelona. He coached the marathon runner Nacho Cáceres in the London Olympic Games in 2012.

He was aware that international community in Barcelona lacked the level of care and treatment that they experienced at home, so after 10 years of working in Spain, he founded a multidisciplinary and multilingual center with great professionals, serving patients in their own language and in the way that they expect and deserve.

As he always says, “a marathon is to enjoy, not to suffer”. He is a passionate runner, and recently trail runner, that enjoys the positive effects of good health, time spent in nature, and positive thinking.

 Dr. Femke Ellens

Physician, MRCGP [int]


Dr. Femke was born and raised in The Netherlands and studied at the University of Maastricht. She worked as a physician in the emergency department in Hertogenbosch.

In 2004 Dr. Femke moved to Cyprus where she started her own primary health care center in Limassol. Besides being the owner and lead-physician of the center, she was active in the Cypriot Sport Society. She was doctor on duty at several (inter)national sport events (volleyball, weight lifting, boxing) and played for the Cypriot national team of beach tennis and squash.

In 2015 Dr. Femke was accepted as an international member of the Royal College of General Practitioners of the UK. She moved to Barcelona in 2017 with her family. She is a committed, energetic doctor with international experience and she stands up for her patients.

She loves playing sports and enjoying the beach with friends and family in Barcelona. She speaks Dutch, English, German and Spanish fluently and is proficient in Greek.


Dr. Ilham Abdelrahim



Dr. Ilham Abdelrahim studied in Belgium and graduated in 2003 from l’Université Catholique de Louvain and then went on to train as a General Practitioner.  She also obtained a postgraduate in Tropical Medicine and International Health from the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine.

She has varied professional experience, having worked in different settings with a very diverse international patient base in General Practitioner practices in Brussels and London, a psychiatric day care center, and the European Commission Medical Service. Here, she discovered her passion for preventative medicine with a focus on what creates optimal health.

She has a special interest in all aspects of family medicine, including preventative medicine, nutrition, psychology, and women’s health. She offers a holistic approach, providing personalized care to help the patient achieve better health.

Having been an expat several times, she understands the challenges patients might face, juggling the stresses of a move, work, and family. She loves spending time with family and friends, running, and reading the latest research on positive health and preventative medicine.

Ilham speaks French and is also fluent in English, Spanish and Arabic.


Daniela Kunz

Physiotherapist & Manual Therapist


Daniela, born and raised in Germany, moved in 2001 to the Netherlands to start her physiotherapy degree, which she completed in 2006. She went on to complete a Master’s in Orthopedic Manual Therapy and also specialized in dry needling therapy. The combination of these fields opens a wide range of possibilities and techniques to help the body recover.

To deepen her knowledge of active recovery she also studied core stability training and shoulder rehabilitation. Her own pregnancies made her aware of the need for proper care during this special period and motivated her to also complete a course in pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain.

After working in various physiotherapy practices and hospitals in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, in 2014 she moved with her family to the beautiful city of Barcelona. 

Daniela speaks German, Dutch, Spanish and English.


Pauline Brugts

Physiotherapist & Trainer


Pauline holds a physiotherapy degree from Utrecht University with experience in several physiotherapy settings such as a hospital, rehabilitation centers as well as a physiotherapy clinic. Pauline has a background in sports; she competed at the highest level in field hockey and won many national and international prizes.

Alongside being a hockey player, she has experience in coaching and training with professional and non-professional athletes. This combination of being an athlete and developing herself professionally in physiotherapy has made her focused on getting the most out of people while helping them with their physical problems.

Pauline loves going out in Barcelona and also enjoys sports and the enthusiasm around them.

She speaks Dutch, English and Spanish.


Lucas Zandbergen



Lucas graduated from his bachelor’s program in June 2018 in Leiden, The Netherlands. During his studies, he completed a minor in  ‘spine related issues’ at the Avans University of Applied Sciences in Breda. Afterwards he did several internships, in Haarlem and in a rehabilitation centre in Leiden with patients who undergo chronic pain. After graduating, he started working in different clinics with diverse client populations, especially spinal and sport related issues. He was also active as the physiotherapist at a football club in his hometown.

This year Lucas had the opportunity to join the Healthcare Barcelona team. With his enthusiasm and willingness to learn he wants to bring fresh insight to the team. The most important thing is to help people to manage their own issues and stimulate an active lifestyle.

Lucas loves to enjoy Barcelona and play football. He speaks Dutch and English.


Juul Crauwels

Rehab Specialist & performance training


Juul holds a masters degree in Human Movement Sciences from Amsterdam and is a certified Strength & Conditioning specialist with 10 years of experience in coaching developmental level and high-level athletes in the Netherlands and Canada.

In the last 10 years working the field of athletic performance training, Juul found that the technical precision needed to get an athlete to be at their best from an athletic standpoint is the key to successful rehab as well. She strongly believes that getting your body to perform the way it’s meant to perform is the same for everyone: whether in professional sports or doing your daily and beloved activities. In Juul’s words: “Human potential is an amazing thing, and I love helping people to go beyond their expectations of their own abilities!”

Since coming to Barcelona, she has been playing in a soccer league with people from all over the world.

Juul speaks Dutch and English.


 Kaitlin M. Callahan, RDN



Kaitlin is an Registered Dietitian Nutritionist from the United States. She holds a master's degree in nutrition from the University of Saint Joseph in Connecticut and a bachelor's degree in nutritional sciences from The University of Arizona.

She has been helping people improve their lives through good nutrition practices for more than five years, and has worked in clinical nutrition, education, diabetes prevention, and health coaching. She uses evidence-based information to help individuals reach their personal health, wellness, weight, and athletic performance goals and find realistic, long-term solutions that fit their lifestyles. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Academia Española de Nutrición y Dietética.

Kaitlin enjoys making a positive impact in people’s lives and continues to learn and grow every day. She loves exploring the mountains of Catalonia as well as the cafes of central Barcelona.

She speaks English and Spanish.
